The annual Al Smith Awards Dinner, to be held Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Embassy Suites Lexington, will have a lively program. The late Larry Craig, who was KPA president in 1989 and one of the most delightful journalists in Kentucky history, will be with us via video gleaned from a tape provided by WKYU-TV in Bowling Green. Larry and his nephew Ryan, editor-publisher of the Todd County Standard and current KPA president, are the winners of the Al Smith Award for public service through community journalism by Kentuckians.
Two other entertaining newspaper folks, former KPA presidents Al Smith, 91, and David Hawpe will share their memories of Larry.
Jennifer P. Brown, formerly of the Kentucky New Era, will pay tribute to Ryan, who will surely have some remarks worth hearing.
And of course, Al Cross will have something to say, as director of UK’s Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues.
The Institute and the Bluegrass Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists co-sponsor the award and the dinner as their annual fund-raiser. The regular price is $125, but SPJ members pay $50, and for KPA members only there is a last-minute, one-time offer: any KPA member can buy two tickets for the price of one, or $62.50 for a single ticket.
