Sale saves Big Sandy News from closing

May 1 the Big Sandy News was scheduled to close its doors and shut down a weekly newspaper that dated back to 1885. But some last minute discussions kept the operation going to see if a deal could be finalized.

Monday night, Ritt Mortimer, who owns the Salyersville Independent, and Tim Stamper signed the paperwork to purchase the Big Sandy News. Ritt got into newspaper ownership in January 2018 when he bought The Independent so he now owns two Eastern Kentucky weeklies. He also does a local TV news program, called Your News Today.

He will be keeping the Big Sandy News in Louisa operating with a goal of expanding it back to a regional newspaper as it was a few years ago.
