Board elections underway in six districts

The Kentucky Press Association has started the process of electing Board members for various districts. In all, six districts are in the nomination process currently and would be followed with the election process.

KPA has 14 districts with an elected Board member in each.

Five of the six districts are up for full three-year terms on the KPA/KPS Board of Directors. The sixth — District 7 — is in a Special Election mode to fill the unexpired term of Jeff Moore. Jeff, general manager at the Carrollton News Democrat, Trimble Banner, Owenton News Herald and Grant County News, retired in September. He had just started another three-year term on the Board in January so the person elected to fill the unexpired term will serve through the January, 2024, convention.

District 7 includes all KPA member newspapers in Boone, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Kenton, Owen and Pendleton counties. The nomination period ends Friday, October 22. If more than one person is nominated, the member newspapers will receive a ballot and will cast a ballot. If only one person is nominated, that individual will be automatically elected to fill out the term.

Full three-year terms are up for election in Districts 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14.

A letter and nomination form were mailed Wednesday to the publisher of each member newspaper with a nomination deadline of Monday, October 25. Again, if more than one person is nominated, the members in those districts will receive a ballot. For any district where only one person is nominated, the person will be elected automatically.

The individuals elected to represent these districts will begin the three-year term in January, 2022, and continue serving through the Winter Convention in 2025.

The districts, counties and current Board member incumbent in this election include:

District 9 — Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Floyd, Greenup, Johnson, Lawrence, Magoffin, Martin and Pike counties. Russ Cassady of the Appalachian News Express currently serves the district.

District 10 — Breathitt, Knott, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Owsley, Perry and Wolfe counties. Jessica Butler with the Beattyville Enterprise/Booneville Sentinel currently serves the district.

District 11 — Bell, Clay, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Rockcastle and Whitley counties. Mark Hoskins with the Manchester Enterprise currently serves the district.

District 12 — Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, McCreary, Pulaski, Russell, Taylor and Wayne counties. Charlie VanLeuven with the Casey County News currently serves the district.

District 14 — Boyle, Clark, Estill, Garrard, Jessamine, Lincoln, Madison, Mercer and Powell counties. Keith Taylor of the Berea Citizen currently serves the district.

KPA does not have a term limit so all elected Board members in the 14 districts are eligible to be nominated when their term ends.

Publishers/general managers in each of the districts listed should have received a letter and nomination form this week.
