Contest period ends, now judging process begins

For the first time since mid-July, I won’t be pleading, begging or preaching about entering the 2021 KPA News and Ad contests. That’s because the deadline finally got here and the vault door has been shut to the system.

The 2021 contests had fewer entries than 2020, as expected, with 369 entries in the KPA Ad Contest and 1,795 entries in the News Contest. That’s 500 less in the Ad Contest than two years ago and 1,000 less entries in the News Contest. In all, 69 newspapers registered to enter but it appears only 64 actually submitted entries.

The low number of entries and newspapers in the Ad Contest did require some restructure. There will be only one Daily Division class and only two Weekly Division classes. There were no Associate Member Newspapers entering and only three Student Publications entered with a total of 10 entries so there will be no contest for Student Publications.

On the News side, the story is different with numerous entries in each division giving us a legitimate contest.

We’re checking the entries now and soon will release software access to members of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association that will be judging this year’s contests. Contest winners in both will be announced Friday, January 21, 2022, during the KPA Winter Convention.
