After taking 2021 off because of the pandemic, as well as partially shutting down in mid-summer 2020, the current plan is to return the KPA internship program to reality in the summer of 2022.
In 2020, after COVID-19 hit the Bluegrass, some interns found themselves completing only part of the schedule because of newspaper shut downs and offices not being open.
Then when the pandemic continued in 2021, the decision was made early to cancel the program in hopes of a return in 2022. As of right now, it appears the Kentucky Journalism Foundation, the true sponsor of the internships, will be back in business for the 10-week internship period in the summer.
The schedule will change somewhat for the 2022 internships after changes were made by the Board. Students will have until Friday, February 25, to apply so Student Intern applications will not be sent to the colleges and universities until the second semester begins. Meanwhile, applications by interested Host Newspapers will be later than usual. KPA expects to send the application to eligible Host Newspapers in early February.
Those eligible to host an intern are newspapers that participate in the Kentucky Press Statewide Classified Program.
