Each year, the Lexington Herald-Leader honors a KPA member newspaper or person for outstanding community service.
The award was established in 1967 in memory of Edwards M. Templin, promotion director of the Lexington Herald and Lexington Leader. In 1996, it was renamed the Lewis Owens Community Service Award to honor the publisher emeritus of the Herald-Leader for his longtime service to the community and service organizations and to the Kentucky newspaper industry. The award was presented to Lewis Owens, 1984 KPA President, in 1996 when it was announced the Herald-Leader was renaming the award.
It is presented annually to a Kentucky newspaper or person performing the most outstanding community service.
Nominations for the 2019 award are being accepted until December 1, 2019.
To nominate a KPA member or staff member, submit a nomination letter detailing the community service provided and background on the individual.
