Finding sources for a story isn’t a problem but getting them to talk could be an obstacle

Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellow Melba Newsome, an independent journalist from North Carolina, is tackling that project during her fellowship. She said one of the biggest surprises she’s found in her project wasn’t in finding the sources, but in getting them to agree to be interviewed for stories.

She learned that source participation can be a challenge. Particularly because these three things are true:

• potential sources are not savvy about the media process;

• they have a general distrust of the media; and-or

• we as reporters are prepared to engage them.
