Letter to the Editor/The Courier-Journal
A free, independent media is needed now in this country as much as ever.
Regardless of one’s political affiliation, suppression of the media by a president should terrify you. Donald Trump has openly declared war on the media, he has accused news networks of dishonesty when they disagree with him or report his activities and he has even called for certain journalists to be fired because the news they report is not to his liking. This is how fascism begins.
It is the duty of the media to provide a check on our elected leaders. You may dislike what a reporter writes about a politician that you support but fact-based reporting is vital to maintaining a well-informed electorate.
Freedom of the press is enshrined in the First Amendment and is among our most cherished and important rights as a people in a democracy. No political figure who supports media suppression has any interest in defending the U.S. Constitution or our nation’s democratic principles.
