Newspapers participating in the Kentucky Statewide Classified Program are getting a letter opening the Host Newspaper application process for the internship program. Funded by the Kentucky Journalism Foundation and operated by the KPA Past Presidents, 15 internships worth $4,000 apiece will be awarded for the 10-week summer internship period. The amount was increased for 2019 because the Past Presidents had learned much of the income for students goes toward rent since they likely have to rent an apartment for the internship.
2019 is also a special year for KPA with its 150th anniversary. KPA was founded January 13, 1869, and is the nation’s 10th oldest state press association.
The program is celebrating its 25th year and has been successful in encouraging students to consider a career in newspapers following graduation. Internships normally begin two weeks after the end of the Spring semester and are for the equivalent of 40 hours per week for those 10 weeks. While the funds for the internship pay come from the Kentucky Journalism Foundation, Host Newspapers are required to pay all taxes, Social Security and any travel/business expense for the student intern.
Applications will be accepted through December 28. The KPA Past Presidents will select the 15 Host Newspapers during the winter convention and then those newspapers will be given access to the online applications by students.
To be eligible for an internship, a student:
• must be attending a Kentucky college or university or must have graduated from a Kentucky high school if attending an out-of-state college
• must have completed the freshman year of college by the end of the Spring 2019 semester.
Students are invited to go to www.kypress.com/intern to apply. Click on “Student Applications” and then on Journalism for internships with newspapers; on Public Relations for an internship with a public relations agency. The deadline to apply is January 31, 2019.
Host Newspapers will have until March 22 to select their intern for next summer or will forfeit the internship.
