Interim Joint Committee schedules hearing on public notice advertising for July 26

If you’re looking for something to do on Wednesday, July 26, come on over, down or up to your Capitol. The House and Senate Joint Interim Committee on Local Government will be taking up public notice advertising and publication laws at that meeting.

The Kentucky League of Cities and Kentucky Association of Counties will be appearing before the committee and KPA received an invitation this week to discuss the issue with the interim committee as well at the same meeting.

The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. (Eastern) in the Capitol Annex, immediately behind the Capitol. The Interim Joint Committee ususally meets in Room 154 but that will be confirmed as the meeting date approaches.

We’ve been “threatened” that the 2018 session could be the time the legislature takes action on public notices on websites vs. in newspapers. It’s been a topic of discussion for almost 13 years but interest appears to be growing with the legislators.

It would be a great opportunity for you to see a Senate and House Joint Committee in action. And for your legislator(s), if you have one on the interim committee, to see of your interest in the topic by attending committee meeting.

There is no legislation in place so it won’t be like a committee meeting during a session where specifics will be discussed with testimony for or against a specific bill. But you can rest assured alternatives to public notices in newspapers will be at the forefront.

Check the Interim Committee membership list below and if you have a State Rep or Senator on the committee, give it special consideration to attend. Committee meetings normally last up to two hours.
