Honors continue for documentary: Available on Amazon Prime, honored by basketball magazine; and won two Communicator Awards from AIVA
In 2019, the Georgetown News-Graphic held the world premiere of “Leader of the Pack,” a documentary on Scott County High School’s own Billy Hicks, Kentucky’s winningest high school basketball coach and one of the nation’s winningest high school basketball coaches. James Scogin wrote, directed and filmed most of the documentary but he secured some legendary clips of historic moments in SCHS basketball and Hicks’ history…
“I don’t know many community newspapers that have produced a documentary of this kind, so we believe this is going to be pretty special.”
It has achieved that belief by now being available on Amazon Prime. James also reported over the weekend that SLAM Magazine just launched its Basketball Movie Database (BMDb) and Leader of the Pack is listed along with over 725 basketball related movies and documentaries dating back to 1944.
Scogin and the Georgetown News-Graphic won two Communicator Awards for the documentary of former Scott County High School coach Billy Hicks. The awards were part of the 25th Annual Communicator Awards and presented by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts.
The documentary, “Leader of the Pack,” received Award of Excellence Awards for Film/Video- Sports and for Film/Video-Documentary. Hicks retired in 2019, shortly after the premiere of the documentary.
“I am excited to receive two Communicator Awards this year in the Film/Video/Television category under sports and documentary,” Scogin, videographer and photographer for the News-Graphic. “It is an honor to be recognized alongside so many other creatives. Everyone (at the News-Graphic) worked hard to bring ‘Leader of the Pack’ to Scott County and beyond.
“This award is one step forward for the possibilities of newspapers and what they can achieve.”
Over 6,000 entries worldwide, the Communicator Awards is the largest and most competitive awards program honoring creative excellence for communication professionals. Among other winners of the competition’s highest honor, the Award of Excellence include ESPN Films, Forbes Media, PepsiCo and WWE.
