The Richmond Register, a five-day daily newspaper in Richmond, Ky., is looking for a reporter to join an experienced news staff. This key position requires a self-starter, and some weekend and night work is required on a rotating basis. The Register is located in Madison County, 25 miles south of Lexington. Qualifications:
  • Strong communication, organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to write accurate, effective and engaging stories on deadline when necessary
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or closely related field
  • Proficiency in using computers to write and the Internet to research
  • Familiarity with requirements of photojournalism and ability to take publication quality images with a digital camera

Essential Functions:
  • Develop daily and long-range story and illustrative ideas
  • Write compelling, comprehensive, fact-filled stories on deadline and put readers first by avoiding cliches and arcane language

  • Demonstrate understanding and commitment to serving readers
  • Develop ideas for illustrating stories and be capable of shooting own images as needed

The Mountain Advocate, an award-winning weekly newspaper in Barbourville, Kentucky, home of Union College, has an immediate need for a part-time reporter to round out its editorial staff.

The ideal person should have a background in writing, either professionally or academically, as well as basic photography skills. Solid, grammatically-correct writing skills along with a public-friendly disposition are a must. Experience in graphic design and/or video editing a bonus. Recent college graduates or college students are encouraged to apply!

The position requires a flexible schedule, with approximately 20 working hours per week. The schedule is mostly afternoons and evenings with an occasional few hours on a Saturday.

The ability to meet deadlines and keep an organized schedule is a must, as well as the ability to discern sensitive and confidential information as to maintain the integrity of both the reporter and the newspaper.
