Representatives of the KPA advertising community held a Zoom session Thursday afternoon to talk about the KPA Advertising Contest.
At the heart of the discussion was the 2020 contest that resulted in the lowest number of entries since 1986 and to look at the 25 categories to see if some have run their course and could be deleted.
The group decided to survey members immediately about intentions to enter the 2021 contest when the information is available later this summer. That could determine if the contest will reduce the number of divisions as well as realigning the contest to suit members’ desires.
Publishers and ad managers should be watching for the survey in the next few day.
In the meantime, the group decided to delete for the 2021 contest “Political Advertising” since there are no scheduled elections in 2021; to combine Best Digital/Online Ad and Best Digital/Online Ad Series into one category. The Digital/Online Ad Series category had seven total entries in 2020; and combine Best Special Sections and Best Preprints/Special Publications into one category. Previously, Best Special Sections was a category only for sections inserted into the newspaper. Preprints/Special Publications was a category for catalogs and publications that were not inserted in the newspaper. It included publications such as Chamber of Commerce booklets, tourism publications and athletic event programs designed and sold by the newspaper staff but not inserted into the newspaper.
In 2020, the number of entries resulted in only one daily division, three weekly divisions, a multi-weekly division and no Student Publications divisions since none were entered. The divisions can be easily realigned depending on the number of newspapers entering each.
The entry deadline is set for Friday, October 15, 2021, and the contest period is for all issues published between October 1, 2020, and September 30, 2021. The contest materials should be available in early August. A notice will be sent to all newspapers when the contest entry period begins.
KPA will be reviewing News Contest with news editorial division
Just as it did Thursday with the KPA Advertising Contest, we’ll be reviewing the KPA News Contest with members of the KPA News Editorial Division.
While KPA members supported the news contest in 2020 with entries in all nine divisions — 3 weekly, 3 daily, a multi-weekly and 2 Student Publications — the number of entries and newspapers entering was the lowest since 1994.
Most every category had entries in every division but the group will be looking at any categories where a low number of entries regularly occur and have in recent years,
One constant remains in both contests: The entry deadline will be Friday, October 2 and the contest period is for all entries published between October 1, 2020, and September 30, 2021.
All contest materials will be uploaded and notices will be sent in early August that the entry period has opened.
