KPA members invited to participate in Google News Initiative to build a stronger future for journalism; 2 weeks remaining to apply

Am sharing an email from Ben Shaw with the Google News Initiative Challenges Team

I have an update that I hope will be of interest to your Kentucky Press Association membership. I’m happy to let you know that we have launched the North American GNI Innovation Challenge, which will fund projects that inject new ideas into the local news industry. It is an important new program from the Google News Initiative, our global effort to build a stronger future for journalism.

I thought I’d send a note to draw your attention as the North America GNI Innovation Challenge application window will close in about 2 weeks. It closes on July 15th, 2019 at midnight, Pacific time. We would like anyone who could potentially benefit from the program to be aware of the initiative and it would be great to make sure the information is shared with your network so they don’t miss the opportunity if they’re willing to participate?

By way of context (read more in our blogpost here), we are inviting proposals from North American news organizations for projects focused on generating revenue and/or increase audience engagement for local news. A panel of Googlers and industry experts will review the submissions and fund selected projects up to $300,000 and finance up to 70 percent of the total project cost.Find some helpful resources below:

Should you or your members have any questions, please feel free to write us at nagnichallenge@google.com

Best regards,

Ben Shaw on behalf of the GNI Innovation Challenges Team
