Probably the largest gathering of KPA Past Presidents in many years took place January 24 during KPA’s 150th Anniversary Convention. But 15 of the presidents, since Betty Berryman in 1986, gathered at the Marriott East to celebrate the history and also to select Host Newspapers for the 2019 KPA/Kentucky Journalism Foundation internship program. The Past Presidents operate as the board of the foundation with the annual job of overseeing the internship program.

For 2019, the Past Presidents are offering 15 internships with qualified KPA members and each internship is worth $4,000. Letters to officially inform the Host Newspapers of their selection will be mailed in the next few days, once the deadline has past for students to apply to be an intern.

The 15 newspapers selected by the KPA Past Presidents include Falmouth Outlook, Livingston Ledger, Grant County News, Elizabethtown News Enterprise, Appalachian News Express, Beechtree News, Morehead News, Mt. Sterling Advocate, Pioneer News, Tompkinsville News, Georgetown News Graphic, Lebanon Enterprise, London Sentinel Echo, Ashland Daily Independent and the Jessamine Journal.

The Past Presidents also selected five alternates in case any of the 15 cannot file the internship position. Those five will be notified, in order of preference, if it’s necessary.
