Half-day event to take place on September 25 in Kansas City
The Local Media Association invites you to join them for an open, honest and productive discussion in Kansas City this fall. The Women in Local Media Summit will address the diversity challenges that the media industry faces with a focus on changing and improving it.
The situation is not good. Only 17 percent of senior leaders at media companies worldwide are women. Our own LMA research paints a similar picture at local media companies in North America.
The New York Times recently launched a gender initiative aimed at balancing their news coverage. Their research shows that men are 3x more likely to be quoted in a newspaper and that 75% of quotes on the front page come from men. One of their first moves was to hire a gender editor.

At this summit, we’ll hear from media executives that are making diversity a top priority at their company.
The faculty for the Women in Local Media Summit will include 8-10 industry leaders (men and women) who are working on solutions. We’ll hear from CEOs, journalists, corporate executives and digital leaders. The full list will be announced in the coming weeks.The summit will be led by Ginger Neal, VP Digital Sales & Operations, San Francisco Chronicle & SF Gate. Neal will share what Hearst is doing to increase diversity in their newspaper division. It became a top company priority in 2018.
