Looking for more diverse sources? Here’s some tips

Melba Newsome is an independent journalist, RJI Fellow and editor in Charlotte, North Carolina. She will create a diversity training program that she will implement in newsrooms to help them include people of color and underrepresented groups in their reporting to be more reflective of the communities they serve.

In her latest post, she offers suggestions about how to find more diverse sources… such as utilizing resources that are already out there such as “People of Color Also Know Stuff” and “Help a Reporter Out.” She also says folks can build their own databases… many churches, nonprofits and others have lists of people who would be happy to talk to reporters.
