Just shy of its 19th anniversary, the Medical Leader in Pikeville will cease publication today. It’s been an 8,000-circulation free weekly in far Eastern Kentucky counties and one county in West Virginia. Here’s information from the “About Us” page on the Medical Leader’s website:
The Medical Leader newspaper, founded June 1, 1999, has grown from a small monthly publication into a weekly community newspaper that serves four counties as well as the world-wide web.
Published by Pikeville Medical Center (PMC), the newspaper expanded its content over the years from ground-breaking medical news to “good news” stories from throughout eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia. Comprehensive sports coverage, obituaries, birth announcements, church and community calendars, and special columns are also found in the Medical Leader each week.
A dedicated team of full-time staff writers, graphic designers, PMC public relations staff and a managing editor are responsible for weekly content while a group of sales professionals drive the publication’s advertising.
The newspaper is free to the community with a circulation nearly 8,000 weekly each week in Pike, Floyd and Letcher counties in Kentucky as well as Mingo County in West Virginia. The newspaper was founded by PMC President and Chief Executive Officer Walter E. May, who also owns a number of radio stations and a television station through the operations of East Kentucky Broadcasting.
