Obit: Toby Hightower may have been oldest winning columnist in KPA’s history

In the 2016 KPA Contest, you’ll find the name Toby Hightower as the Best Columnist in the small Weekly Division 1 class. He wrote for the Todd County Standard and at age 96, received first place in the KPA Contest. The Standard’s publisher Ryan Craig has reported that Toby died Tuesday.

Tobias Earl “Toby” Hightower, age 96 of Terre Haute, IN, passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Cobblestone Health Care Facility in Terre Haute, IN of natural causes.  Services for Mr. Hightower will be 12 Noon Tuesday, September 5, 2017 graveside in Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton with burial to follow. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. at Latham Funeral Home until time for the service.

Mr. Hightower was born November 7, 1920 in Todd County, KY the son of the late Horace E. and Emma Carver Hightower.  He was an Educator, Principal and had been writing for the Todd County Standard and the Kentucky New Era.  He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents and also his wife, Iona Hightower in 2012.

Survivors include his son, Rand Hightower of Little Rock, Arkansas; his daughter, Shirley Luten and her husband John of Oro Valley, Arizona; his sister, Dorothy Palmer of Atlanta, GA and his granddaughter, Laura Hightower.
