Jim Abernathy, former editor of the Mayfield Messenger, passed away on July 1. Jim started his journalism career as a paperboy for the Hickman Courier in his hometown.
He graduated from Murray State University in 1971 with a degree in journalism and after graduating, Harry Lee Waterfield hired Jim as editor of the Hickman County Gazette in Clinton.
In April 1974, he was hired by Messenger publisher Ray Edwards as a reporter/photographer and later farm editor. He became editor in December 2003.
Jim retired in February 28, 2014, two months shy of having been with the Messenger for 40 years.
