Paducah-based Paxton Media Group, which owns the Messenger-Inquirer, bought three newspapers in Indiana and Illinois last week.
And that will mean more jobs in Owensboro.
The purchase from San Diego-based Brehm Communications included the Princeton Daily Clarion in Princeton, Indiana; the Mount Carmel Register in Mount Carmel, Illinois; and The Standard in Boonville, Indiana.
They will become part of the Owensboro-based Kentucky-Indiana Newspaper Group, which is managed by Group Publisher Bob Morris.
That group includes the Messenger-Inquirer, Madisonville Messenger and Vincennes (Indiana) Sun-Commercial as well as three weeklies — the Franklin (Kentucky) Favorite, Portland (Tennessee) Leader and McLean County News.
All six are printed at the Messenger-Inquirer.
Morris said the three new acquisitions will also be printed here.
They will also be paginated in the Paxton hub inside the Messenger-Inquirer building.
That will mean more jobs, but Morris said he doesn’t know how many yet.
The hub currently employs 65 people designing pages for now-13 dailies and 21 weeklies in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and now Illinois, he said.
“It’s a big operation,” Morris said. “Most people don’t know how big it is.”
He said Paxton Media “still believes in newspapers. We think the future is bright.”
Morris said “quality acquisitions” like the ones Friday “strengthen both the company and the newspapers.”
Mount Carmel is about 70 miles from Owensboro. The other two are closer.
Portland, Tennessee, which is the greatest distance from Owensboro, is roughly 100 miles away.
“We operate in a pretty big radius around Owensboro,” Morris said.
The Princeton Daily Clarion, founded in 1846, is Gibson County’s oldest, continuous business.
It publishes five days a week.
The Mount Carmel Register publishes three days a week.
The Standard is a weekly serving Boonville, Chandler, Elberfeld, Lynnville, Newburgh, Tennyson and the rest of Warrick County.
Paxton Media is a family-owned company with more than 30 daily newspapers and several weekly publications across Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee.
