SPJ Chapter panel discusses 2021 legislation on Open Government; looks toward future sessions

The Bluegrass Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists held a Zoom session Thursday evening on the 2021 General Assembly and a look at what’s probably on the horizon when the gavel bangs on 2022’s 60-day session.

Hosted by the chapter president Tom Eblen, the panel included Michael Abate, KPA general counsel; Sharon Burton, KPA president and publisher/owner of the Adair County Community Voice and Farmer’s Pride; and long-time reporter/editor Jennifer Brown, representing the Kentucky Open Government Coalition.

Focus on the 2021 session was on numerous attacks on the state’s Open Records Laws, especially House Bill 312. The panel agreed that legislation not passed during the session or vetoed by Governor Andy Beshear will be back on the docket when the 2022 session begins January 5.
