At the January Business meeting, members overwhelmingly approved a recommendation from the Board to increase the dues structure that KPA has operated with since 2002.
The structure used since then called for dues to be based on a newspaper’s advertising inch rate x 94.5 inches of advertising. What we had noticed was that newspapers were moving to a modular ad system in many cases, often resulting in less dues amounts. Others had simply lowered their ad rates to increase business.
At the Fall Board Retreat, the board enacted a motion to increase dues by 2.5 percent a year for the next five years. That would take effect as soon as the membership approved it.
We had already billed for 2019 dues but made the stipulation that if the membership in fact approved the increase, a supplemental invoice would be sent. Those were mailed this week to each full member and Associate Member Newspaper.
In most cases, the invoice shows the amount already paid and then the additional dues based on the new dues structure. It only amounts to a couple of extra inches per year but will increase 2.5 percent per year through 2023.
Those who have not yet paid their 2019 dues will see the previous amount owed plus the new amount for total dues for 2019.
